It’s not pretty, but it’s here:
PTQ London – Bath
Saturday 2nd April 2005
This was one of those days – 85 players pre-registered, and while only 73 of those turned up, other arrivals on the day gave a grand total of 105 competitors! This is the first time I have had over 100 players, so of course I hadn’t registered enough decks, I didn’t have enough product with me, and I was scrabbling for tables! Thank you to the players who patiently waited for ten minutes while I did the “headless chicken” act that every TO dreads.
Following seven tough rounds of Sealed Deck, the top 8 players progressed to a Booster Draft knockout stage. After this, the final standings were:
1. Dave Grant
2. Stuart D Wright
3. Daniel Godfrey
4. Stefano Gattolin
5. Thomas N Demeranville
6. Ryan Hough
7. Alastair McClare
8. Chris Conboy
Dave Grant drafted a potent red-black deck, which takes him to London. Second-placed Stuart Wright also drafted red, complemented with strong white cards. Hopefully the top 8 decks should all be listed on Wizards’ site very soon. Daniel Godfrey has written us a tourney report.
Thank you to everyone who came, and especially to the judging team, who ensured we ran to good time so the event finished before 10pm. Congratulations to Andy Smith, who passed his judges’ test as well as judging on the day!
Betrayers of Kamigawa Prerelease – Bath & Bristol
22nd & 23rd January 2005
Fifty-seven players turned up to the Bath pre-release; the eventual undefeated winner was Gordon Benson, who showed yet again that Limited is his format – even if it’s only once a year! Some photos from Bath can be found here.
Eighty-eight players turned out for the Bristol pre-release (causing me some consternation as it was a few more than the tables I had put out). The undefeated winner was Adam Barnett, who is also an excellent Limited format player.
Congratulations to both!
Thank you to all the players, and thank you to everyone who moved tables and chairs – always appreciated. Special thanks to Tom, Sara, Dave and Al for all their hard work judging, which made my weekend very relaxed.
PTQ Nagoya – Bath
Saturday 27th November 2004
1. Martin Lawrence
2. Hanrahan Highland
3. Robin Lubarr
4. Colin Tipton
5. Rich Loud
6. Alex Willcox
7. Mark Bathe-Taylor
8. Colin Marsh
This PTQ was notable for the fact that two contributors to MagicSouthWest – Colin Tipton and Hanrahan Highland – made the top four, with Han losing out to Martin Lawrence 2-1 in the final. Good going!
Very Unhinged in Bristol
Twenty-eight players turned out to growl and shout across the tables, but an even greater degree of chaos was in store. Three short power cuts and one very long power cut reduced players to using their mobile phones as light sources – it really was one of those days! I won’t forget the game played under the table, nor Mat Bailie’s trainers coming into play.
Thank you to everyone for their good humour and patience during a rather trying day, and congratulations to Andrew Buchanan who – by going undefeated – showed himself to be the most Unhinged champion we’ve ever had!
Gloucestershire County Championships 2004 – Bristol
Thank you to the 26 players who fiercely contested this
year’s championships. There was a mixture of decks in the field, with Affinity
being the most popular (20%), alongside GB, GU and Tooth.
Congratulations to Luke Worthington
(playing GU) who beat Ian Roberts (playing GB) to become the Gloucestershire County Champion 2004!

PTQ New Orleans – Bristol
Stuart Wright won PTQ New Orleans in Bristol on 31st August 2003, with Russell James dropping after the semi-final. A total of 77 players competed, with another 15 or so playing in the Standard event. We’ve got photos, this time accompanied by Maggie Williams’ interviews with some of the famous faces who turned out (“Why Bristol is fab...”). We’ve also got some decklists and the top 8 summary.
GP London Trial – Bristol
Enter the Dragon... White was the dominant colour at the GP London trial (Onslaught Block Constructed) in Bristol on Sunday 20th July 2003. Of the top eight decks, four (including both finalists) relied heavily on White Fat. Akroma and Exalted Angel played their part but, for our money, monster of the day was Eternal Dragon, entering play again and again and again...
Top 8 decklists and photos from the event are available.
Scourge Pre-release – Bristol
Dave Gale came out on top of this hard-fought contest, in which the pile of Swamps on the TO’s table dwindled to nothing. We’ve a top 8 summary, and Dave has also kindly provided a list of the cards he opened, along with an explanation of the deck he built, here.
PTQ Yokohama – Plymouth
Phil Williams qualified when Quentin Martin courteously dropped in the final of this Limited event. As usual, we have a top 8 summary available.
PTQ Yokohama – Bristol
Stuart Wright came out on top of this well-attended event, after seven long rounds of Sealed Deck were capped with a top-8 Booster Draft. The top 8 summary is available for your perusal.
English Nationals Qualifier
Quentin Martin won the Nationals Qualifier in Bristol. The top 8 summary is available, along with six of the top 8 decklists.
Legions Pre-release – Bristol
Red-Green seemed to be the order of the day, with Beasts & Burn proving an irresistible combination to many players. Martin Bishop won with a seemingly unstoppable deck. If you want more gen, we’ve got a top 8 summary and a few photos.
PTQ Venice – Bristol
Here’s results, photos, judge questions answered by Dave Gale, and decklists.
